As of yesterday, there’s been a ton of scuttlebutt around the internet about a new Mortal Kombat video that’s been making the ‘rounds. Starting on Kotaku, who broke the video, and then making its way to the YouTube, this ten minute video displays a gritty, violent, and realistic (kinda) take on Mortal Kombat and people have been blowing this thing up with questions of its legitimacy. The inevitable comparisons NaturalMotion’s first entry is drawing to other games are numerous. The analogy of it being like Madden’s XFL or AFL game are as tired and cliche as Madden itself. While, it would not only be hypocritical of me to damn the Madden franchise, it would be as hypocritical of me to say that the comparisons aren’t sound in some ways. Backbreaker’s biggest flaw, of which it has many, is that it’s not Madden. Many gamers, especially those of the Madden faithful, have already damned it for that reason alone. But the game should be celebrated and given a shot to (okay, get ready for the tacky football/sports cliche here) get through the rookie slump and eventually come out on top in the league of ever growing sports titles. Title=Subtle
As cheesy as it may seem and as lame as the title is, I love Robocop. It’s one of the most violent, foul movies ever created. In most respects, it’s not a masterpiece. What makes it good is how dynamic it is. If taken seriously, it can be looked at as a dark comedy/sci-fi/action film; and it’s decent when looked at in that light. However, you can also look at it as just an overly violent b-movie about a robot. And like most movies I’ve watched since I was a kid, I’ve learned much from Robocop. I spent a majority of last night not sleeping before finally dozing off for about two hours. My two hours were shaken when I woke up to the sudden need to rocket Yoohoo into my toilet. I have this sort of love/hate thing with video games. I’ve been playing video games since I was about 3 years old which is right around when we first got our NES. Now, I’m 25 going on 26 and still have the same problem that I had when I was 3 and I just started playing Super Mario Bros. That problem is that I can’t beat most video games. I shouldn’t say it’s that I can’t. More or less, that I just don’t. Think about it for a second… neither do most of you.

Starting out, video games definitely had potential to provide entertainment for individuals of all ages. Games like Pong, Pac Man, and Space Invaders could appeal to just about anyone. Over time, video games have come to grow and mature with their audience and now, not all games are for everyone. Since games like Doom, and Mortal Kombat, violence in video games has become such a hot topic in the media and the scape goat for such tragedies as Columbine.
